Kritamo (Rock Samphire) (13.4 oz)

Nissos Greek Foods

Rock Samphire, also known as Sea Fennel, is a fleshy aromatic plant that grows wild in rocky crevices along the coast. In Greece, it is known as Krìtamo. Nissos' kritamo is hand harvested and marinated in brine and white vinegar.

It has a robust, sea scent, a delicious earthy, briny flavor and is an excellent addition to tomato and other salads. It makes a great addition to a simple dish of giant beans, extra virgin olive oil, Greek herbs and  vinegar. It’s also terrific as a garnish in soups and over fish.

Krìtamo has significant nutritional value with considerable levels of vitamins C, E, and K as well as iodine and has high concentrations of fatty acids such as Omega 3 and 6. Sailors of old traditionally consumed it as protection against scurvy. It also has strong antioxidant properties with polyphenols such as flavonoids and carotenoids.

2nd order and 2nd review love this Kritimos

We eat it on boiled potatoes with butter or olive oil. It has a wonderful fragrance and taste unlike anything thing else I have eaten. The pickling juice is fragrant too, we use it too. It’s worth noting that this is not the rock samphire that grows in OK or Scotland. Or for sale in completely different plant with a completely different flavour profile.

Rock Samphire or Kritimos was created for boiled potatoes

Delicious, fast an easy to boiled potatoes were slathered with a little olive oil and butter and rested on a bed bruised fresh mustard greens with a piece of Rock Samphire for each bite. A few oil cured black olives and a few salt dried capers finished off the plate. This was one of the tastiest things I made this year. The jar is generous
