The island of Chios, located in the Aegean, is renowned for its citrus fruits as well as the exotic resin, mastiha. When the Genoese settled on the island during the Middle Ages, they cultivated vast citrus orchards of oranges and tangerines, especially in the area of Kampos. Since then Chios has been famous for its sweets and liqueurs made from these exceptional fruits.
Loukoumia or "Turkish Delight" is a chewy confection that is popular throughout Greece. This unique variety is flavored from the bergamot orange or pergamonto in Greek, arguably one of the most exotic and fragrant citrus fruits in all of Greece. In the U.S. bergamot is best known as the distinctive flavoring in Earl Grey tea.
