Rock Samphire, also known as Sea Fennel, is a fleshy aromatic plant that grows wild in rocky crevices along the coast. In Greece, it is known as Krìtamo. Nissos' kritamo is hand harvested and marinated in brine and white vinegar.
It has a robust, sea scent, a delicious earthy, briny flavor and is an excellent addition to tomato and other salads. It makes a great addition to a simple dish of giant beans, extra virgin olive oil, Greek herbs and vinegar. It’s also terrific as a garnish in soups and over fish.
Krìtamo has significant nutritional value with considerable levels of vitamins C, E, and K as well as iodine and has high concentrations of fatty acids such as Omega 3 and 6. Sailors of old traditionally consumed it as protection against scurvy. It also has strong antioxidant properties with polyphenols such as flavonoids and carotenoids.
