The island of Chios, located in the Aegean, is renowned for its citrus fruits as well as the exotic resin, mastiha. When the Genoese settled on the island during the Middle Ages, they cultivated vast citrus orchards of oranges and tangerines, especially in the area of Kampos.
Loukoumia or "Turkish Delight" is a chewy confection that is popular throughout Greece. This unique variety is flavored from tangerines (mandarin oranges), which have grown on the island for centuries.
